My Story
I’ve always been creative and have lived near the coast for many years, but it wasn’t until I moved to Charleston six years ago to be closer to my granddaughters that I fell in love with the Lowcountry marshes.
The open skies, endless clouds, and ever-changing marshes pulled me toward them. I found myself capturing them through my own lens, using color, texture, and layers of paint to interpret the landscape as I saw and felt it.
As I painted, I began saving the dried acrylic paint from my palettes. Palette after palette, the colorful pieces accumulated in my studio. I wasn’t quite sure what I would do with them—I just couldn’t bring myself to throw them away.
Several years later, while making a collage with one of my granddaughters, I pulled out some of that dried paint. We began playing with it, and before long I had created a couple of quirky little angelfish.
That was the beginning of Coastal Creations.
What started almost by accident has grown into a body of work all its own. Today, I transform those saved layers of paint into herons, sea turtles, seahorses, fish, shells, and other coastal forms—giving the paint from my landscapes an entirely new life.
From Painting to Coastal Creation
Every Coastal Creation carries a little history with it. The material begins as dried acrylic paint saved from my landscape palettes—layers of color that once helped create skies, marshes, water, and clouds.
In my studio, I cut, stretch, layer, and shape those pieces by hand, allowing the existing colors and textures to help guide what each piece becomes.
The result is an original work that gives those treasured pieces of paint a new purpose—and ensures that no two Coastal Creations can ever be exactly alike.
